The first law on corruption was adopted in 1889, while laws on preventing corruption - in 1906 and 1916 following public reaction to this socio-political phenomenon. Unlike traditional legal principles, these laws required officials to prove their innocence.

On a global level, we see more and more countries promulgating new and more sophisticated anti-bribery and corruption legislation as well as aggressive enforcement by government regulators. Enforcement agencies of different countries are also increasingly cooperating in their fight against corruption. In addition, more countries are introducing individual criminal liability for bribery related offences.
